44 - The unOfficial, unSanctioned Obama Musical" has taken the stage in Philadelphia for a limited engagement at the Suzanne Roberts Theater from October 29 to November 3, 2024. This production, conceived by Eli Bauman, offers a nostalgic and humorous look back at the political landscape that shaped the election of Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States.

Drawing inspiration from his experiences on the 2008 campaign in Las Vegas, Bauman channels the spirit of transformation and hope that characterized Obama’s historic rise. The musical reflects on a time when politics resembled a fight club, filled with tough negotiations and compromises, yet often cloaked in prejudice and bigotry. It captures the essence of Obama’s campaign mantra, “Yes We Can,” and examines the ongoing American dilemma of race, providing a poignant reminder that the revolution is still being debated.

Featuring a talented cast, the show stars T.J. Wilkins as President Obama, Chad Doreck as Vice President Joe Biden, and Shanice Alexander as Michelle Obama. Wilkins, a veteran performer, noted the unique talents of his castmates, highlighting Summer Nicole Greer as a standout who energizes the audience each night. Doreck’s portrayal of Biden adds a layer of comedic relief as he serves as the narrator and sidekick to Obama, while also keeping the performance lively with unexpected moments.

The musical score, delivered by the Andrew Jackson Five under the direction of Anthony Brewster, resonates with a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of the '80s and '90s R&B. Each song feels familiar, further engaging the audience and enhancing the storytelling. Bauman expressed his joy in performing, stating he finds himself smiling in the orchestra pit, absorbing the lively interaction of the room.

Shanice Alexander, who portrays the beloved Michelle Obama, acknowledged the risks of embodying such a well-known figure. She aimed to showcase Michelle’s integrity while bringing her own identity to the role. Meanwhile, Doreck remains mostly on script but adds his flair to keep the performance unpredictable and entertaining.

With its engaging music, choreography, and high-energy performances, the show offers both entertainment and reflection on the recent past, providing clarity to today's political climate. The production is sure to leave audiences pondering the evolution of American politics and the impact of Obama’s presidency.

This very special show holds a limited engagement in Philadelphia, with plans for more performances in 2024 and a full touring schedule to follow. Don’t miss the chance to witness this unique blend of history, humor, and heartfelt performances.
